1. Information we collect
Account information. When you create an account we collect details such as your name and email address, and which sign-in method you used. If you use the app as a guest, we do not collect these until you sign in.
Content you add. Information you choose to enter or upload while using the app, such as entries, notes, and photos. Please avoid adding information that you do not want us to process, particularly sensitive information about yourself or another person. We process content you add to provide the features you request and to operate, secure and support the service.
Device location. If you grant permission, the app may use your device's location locally, for example to show information about what is nearby. We do not store your device's precise location on our servers. Requests for map and forecast data cover the area you are viewing and go to the providers described in section 5. You can withdraw this permission in your device settings.
Purchase information. Your subscription, purchase or access status. For purchases made through an app store, the app store processes the payment. For purchases made on our website, our payment provider processes the payment and we receive your email address and purchase details. We do not receive your full payment card details.
Usage and device information. The app version and operating system you use, which features you use, and crash and diagnostic reports. Depending on the error and your app settings, a crash or diagnostic report may include technical information such as your account ID, IP address, device details, a screenshot of the screen at the time of the error, and recent app activity. We use this information to diagnose and fix problems.
Communications. Your email address if you opt in to our newsletter, and anything you send us when you contact support.
Website. Our website may use cookies and similar technologies for necessary functions, analytics and advertising measurement. Some limited measurement that does not use cookies may occur before you make a choice. Where required by law, we will obtain consent before collecting or using information for non-essential analytics or advertising. You can change your choices through the cookie controls on our website.
2. How we collect it
- Directly from you, when you sign up, add content, make a purchase, opt in to our newsletter, or email us.
- Automatically from your device and the app, in the form of usage and diagnostic information.
- From third parties: your sign-in provider (Google or Apple), the app stores, and crowdfunding backer lists so we can deliver rewards.
3. How we use it
We use your information to:
- provide and personalise the app's features;
- save and sync the content you add across your devices;
- manage subscriptions, trials, lifetime access, and backer rewards;
- send newsletters you have opted in to;
- connect third-party apps or devices that you authorise, where that feature is available;
- diagnose crashes, keep the service secure, and improve the app;
- measure website traffic and marketing performance; and
- meet our legal and accounting obligations.
4. Sharing with other users
Content you add is not displayed to other users through Swell Scope. It may be accessed by us or our service providers where reasonably necessary to operate, secure or support the service, or where required by law.
Your spots and sessions stay yours. There is no "share with everyone" option, and we never combine your spots or sessions with other users' to produce anything, in the app or elsewhere. See section 7.5 of our Terms of Service for the full commitment.
5. Who we share it with
Service providers. We use companies to help us run Swell Scope. They process information on our behalf for that purpose. These providers may include services for cloud hosting and storage, user authentication, app stores and subscription management, payment processing, crash and error reporting, email delivery, maps, and weather and tide data. Providers may change over time as we update or improve the service.
Website analytics and advertising. Our website uses Google Analytics and Meta advertising tools to measure traffic and marketing performance. If you consent through the cookie controls, these companies receive information about your visit, such as pages viewed and purchase events, and handle it under their own privacy policies.
Apps and devices you connect. If you connect a third-party app or device, we will share the information needed for that connection and any additional information you approve. You can remove access in the app where that feature is available. The third party's handling of information is governed by its own privacy policy.
Legal and business reasons. We may disclose information when the law requires it, to protect the rights and safety of our users or others, or as part of a sale or transfer of our business.
We do not sell your personal information.
6. Where your information is stored
We are based in Australia. Our service providers may process information outside Australia, including in the United States and other countries where they or their service providers operate. We generally keep information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. After account deletion, we delete or de-identify information where reasonably practicable, including the content you added, subject to legal, accounting, security, backup and other legitimate retention requirements. Edit your details. You can update your details in the app, or ask us to. Some details may come from your sign-in provider.

Newsletter. Use the unsubscribe link in any email, or opt out in the app.
Connected apps. Review and remove connected apps and devices in the app, where that feature is available.
Website cookies. Change your choices at any time through the cookie controls on our website.

The following rights may apply depending on your location and the laws that apply to our processing of your information.
If you are in the EU or UK. You also have the right to restrict or object to our processing, to data portability, and to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.
9. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect information, which may include encryption in transit, access controls and security measures provided by our service providers. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we work to keep your information safe.
10. Children
